Ten percent want to reverse the decision.
In Switzerland, over 10,000 abortions per year (2024) are performed using the abortion pill Mifegyne® (active ingredient: mifepristone) alone. According to studies, around ten percent of pregnant women regret this decision shortly after taking the pill and still want to give birth to their child.
Until now, there has been no way to stop the abortion pill from taking effect.
Abortion pill can be neutralized.
In recent years, a medical procedure has been developed as an antidote to neutralize the abortion pill and preserve the pregnancy. As soon as possible after taking the abortion pill, the pregnant woman takes the bioidentical and pregnancy-preserving hormone progesterone in a temporarily higher dosage. Progesterone is a medicine and is prescribed by doctors who are familiar with the procedure. The chances of success are approximately 70%.
The baby is not harmed.
If the baby was healthy before taking the abortion pill, it will be born healthy after progesterone therapy, provided it survives the abortion pill. According to experience gained from several thousand cases to date, taking a temporarily higher dose of the hormone has no adverse effects on either the pregnant woman or the development of the child. There are fewer miscarriages and premature births, and babies tend to have a higher birth weight.
Risks and side effects
Mifepristone (abortion pill)
In April 2025, the Ethics and Public Policy Center in Washington, D.C., USA, evaluated 865,727 mifepristone prescriptions and concluded that serious side effects occurred in 10.6% of cases (94,600). These included emergency hospital admissions, severe bleeding, infections, sepsis, and necessary follow-up surgery (study “The Abortion Pill Harms Women”).
In Switzerland, a dosage three times higher (600 mg) than the 200 mg dose of mifepristone applied in the USA is used. This may increase the risk caused by mifepristone.
Progesterone (endogenous hormone)
Progesterone has a hemostatic effect and can stabilize and maintain pregnancy. In order to counteract or antagonize the effect of mifepristone, a significantly higher dose of progesterone than the body provides is necessary in the short term. The bioidentical hormone progesterone is a medicine and is prescribed by doctors. They first clarify whether there are any findings that would make the administration of the drug appear contraindicated, e.g., during ongoing cancer therapy, in cases of herpes gestationis, or thromboembolic disorders.
Possible side effects of progesterone
The following side effects in particular may occur when taking progesterone (see Compendium.ch):
- In 1-10 cases out of 100: Shortening of the menstrual cycle, headaches
- In 1-10 cases out of 1000: Drowsiness, dizziness, skin rashes, acne, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
The higher dose of progesterone, required over 4-6 days in order to neutralize mifepristone, occasionally leads to symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, or dizziness.
Complications are possible when treating with progesterone after taking an abortion pill, and it is not 100% certain that the child can be kept in every case.
